India will clash with New Zealand in the final of the ICC 2025 Champions Trophy in Dubai on Sunday (March 9), in what will be a contest between two batting powerhouses of the tournament. Will Toss Be Crucial?

India have lost 14 consecutive tosses in ODI cricket – the longest such streak in the format’s history. Rohit Sharma and the millions of Indian fans would hope that their luck with the coin changes come Sunday as that could be crucial in determining the outcome of the match.

Despite there not being much dew under lights, the team chasing has comprehensively won three of the four encounters in Dubai. In fact, the only game which saw the team setting a target come out on top was when India defended 249 against New Zealand last Sunday.

The average total batting first in Dubai in the tournament is just 245. The highest score batting first is Australia’s 264 in the semi-final.

Clash Of Batting Powerhouses

India have the most devastating batting order in the tournament. Shubman Gill is the leading run-scorer in ODIs since 2022 with an aggregate of 2695 runs in 51 innings at an average of 62.7 and strike rate of 101.1.

Skipper Rohit Sharma has scored at a rate of 107.2 in the first 10 overs in this tournament and will continue to attack in the powerplay, while Virat Kohli will be the playmaker in the middle-order.

Shreyas Iyer will be India’s trump card with the bat, especially in spin-friendly conditions in Dubai. Iyer has an average of in excess of 70 and strike rate of almost 100 against the slower bowlers in ODI cricket. He has been in brilliant form since his return to the ODI unit and has scored 376 runs in seven innings at an average of 53.7 and strike rate of 96.2 in 2025.

New Zealand piled on 320 against Pakistan and 362 against South Africa in the semi-final and have a number of match-winners with the bat in their batting order. No team has registered more individual hundreds than New Zealand’s top five in the tournament.

Rachin Ravindra will be the key for New Zealand at the top of the order. He has already smashed two hundreds in the tournament and is an excellent player of spin with a strike rate of 112.4 against the slower bowlers.

India – Lethal Spin Quartet

The Indian spin quartet comprising Varun Chakravarthy, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, has been the most threatening in the tournament with the best bowling average (28.28) and strike rate (35.8). They took nine wickets in their group game against New Zealand with the mystery spin of Varun Chakravarthy accounting for a match-winning spell of 5/42 in 10 overs. The leg spinner has been in lethal form with the ball in 2025 with 22 dismissals in eight white-ball matches for India at 12.86 apiece.

New Zealand’s slower bowlers are not far behind though, and the duo of Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell has been very impressive in the middle overs. The Kiwi spin unit is only second to India in average and strike rate. While Santner has bagged seven wickets at an economy of 4.85, the off-spinner has returned with six at an economy of just 4.43.

Henry – Exceptional In Powerplay And Death

Matt Henry is the leading wicket-taker of the tournament with 10 dismissals in four matches at an average of 16.7 and strike rate of 18.8. Henry, who is nursing a shoulder niggle and is a doubtful starter for the final, has picked three wickets in the powerplay in four matches in the competition at an economy of 4.63.

He has also developed into a fine bowler in the death overs and has bagged seven wickets at a strike rate of a tad under 10 and economy of just 6.35 in the final 10 overs in the tournament. Henry’s wicket-taking propensity stands out in his ODI career and his bowling strike rate of 28.6 is the third-best for a fast bowler in the format’s history (min.150 wickets).

Shami – Stunning Record At ICC Events

Shami has been a sensational wicket-taker in ICC ODI tournaments with a combined 63 wickets in just 22 matches at a phenomenal average of 14.3 and strike rate of 16.8 with four 4-fers and five fifers. He is the second highest wicket-taker of the 2025 Champions Trophy with eight wickets at an average of 19.87 and economy of 4.96.

Shami has a fabulous record in ODI cricket and his bowling strike rate of 25.7 is the best ever in the format’s history (min. 150 wickets).
